Moving Day

Work, work, work, and finally everything was out of the apartment.

And it actually fit in the truck.

So we drove off in our caravan -- I drove the Echo (with Gunilla) in front, and Lena and Jenny were in the the U-haul behind. We communicated with our Motorola walkie-talkies and it worked perfectly. It felt like I was towing a trailer with a 500 foot tow rope; I'd change lanes and the U-haul would change lanes.

The lunch stop was at JJ's Barbecue for some pulled pork and beef brisket.

This is a restaurant in which what you're eating is posted on the wall.

After another hour, both the drivers were getting sleepy, which called for strawberry shortcake and several cups of coffee. We split the dessert three ways, and still there was plenty.

Jenny supplemented the coffee with jumping jacks to wake up.

We finally arrived at the apartment, and found that unloading was easier than loading.

But we had one major problem: the couches were too big to make the turn around the landing up the stairs, and also were too wide for the doors to the apartment. After a lot of thinking cap work, we realized that they had to be dismantled somehow. Luckily, because the had recliners on each end, the sections had to be independent, and sure enough, I only had to remove eight bolts to get things apart. I took this picture to help in the reassembly:

With them separated, it was pretty easy to get them into the apartment. Here are the two parts of the loveseat.
After everything was unloaded, we rewarded ourselves with a CPK (California Pizza Kitchen) from the Plaza.
Kansas City wasn't hot, so we all fell asleep quickly even though Jenny didn't have an air conditioner yet.
